So for the past week I’ve been living the life sleeping in (7am!), going to a relaxing yoga class, lounging on a beautiful white sand beach, enjoying tropical drinks and delicious dinners with some of my favorite people.
I know…Tough Life.
Jen, Julie, Kristine and I ventured to the beautiful island of Roatan, located in the Caribbean off the coast of Honduras. We landed in San Pedro Sulo Honduras, took a 3 hour shuttle ride to La Ceiba from which we boarded a ferry to our final destination.
Honduras as a whole is a beautiful country, the country side is very green and lush, with a back drop of rolling hills and mountains. (It made me really want to snowboard despite the obvious (and reason for the TROPICAL vacation) lack of snow )!!
The ferry ride was pretty rough, so rough that they passed out puke bags, which I originally thought were ponchos. The ride back a week later was MUCH smoother, poncho’s weren’t even offered!
If I were to go again, I would pay the extra plane fare and flown straight to Roatan or at least to La Ceiba. The extra travel to and from San Pedro Sulo was annoying, and while it was really cool to see the mainland, San Pedro Sulo isn’t the safest place (we were only in and out of the airport so we didn’t have any problems).
We stayed in the Coconut Tree Cabins in the West End. The Cabins were ok, we had issue with our cabin not being up to our expectations in terms of cleanliness, the owner quickly switched our accommodations. The cabin consisted of a kitchen/living room area, two bed rooms and a bathroom, which isn’t too shabby considering we each paid only $110 for the 6 nights.
Oh and we were maybe 200 feet from the beach.
The main street in the West End is a bumpy dirt road lined with restaurants, dive shops, bars, hotels and convenience stores, which runs parallel to the sea. The beach here is nice but the West Bay has the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen (you’ll get to see below) palm trees galore, white sand beaches and crystal clear blue water which blends perfectly with the sky.
I found Earth Mama, an amazing outdoor yoga studio, where I was able to fit in a few morning classes before claiming a beach chair! Roatan is famous for it’s diving, it’s protected by the 2nd largest reef, none of us are certified to dive (though you don’t need to be certified at some of the shops!) so we stuck to snorkling.
Any other time I’ve been snorkling (Jamacia and Costa Rica) I wasn’t able to see anything, so I was pleasantly surprized by how much we were able to see. I have an underwater camera so I was able to snap some pictures (most of which didn’t come out that good as I was just snapping away so the aim is off).
Thanks to the hookup from our friend Luis, I am able to cross Ziplining off my Life To Do List! I thought I was be nervous since I’m afraid of heights, but it wasn’t scary at all. I even looked down a couple of times without freaking myself out! Zipping through the forest was an amazing feeling, I highly recommend it!
If that description wasn’t enough for you, here’s a recap in pictures:
[…] 5. After receiving a text from Julie the other night stating “I just wanted to let you know I am planning events that need to happen the year we all turn 30. Ideas are welcome.” I pulled out my Life to Do list, to see how much progress I’ve made. Turns out very little but I can cross off Go Ziplining! […]
